eeCorps Members Honor MLK Day Across Kansas

eeCorps members serve Kansas communities in many ways beyond environmental education. As AmeriCorps members, we step up to meet local needs by supporting food insecurity and outreach efforts by volunteering our time and skills. This service strengthens communities, builds meaningful partnerships, and shows that eeCorps is about caring for people just as much as caring for the environment.

On Monday, January 19, we celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday by completing a day of service. Here are the ways each of the eeCorps members honored MLK Day across Kansas.

Kelly Magerkurth, AmeriCorps Member serving at Kansas Children’s Discovery Center helped bring Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday to life through a full day of creativity and reflection. In the Maker Space, she supported children as they created “I Have a Dream” clouds inspired by Dr. King’s famous speech, sharing hopes for themselves, their families, their community, and the world.

Megan Vaupel, AmeriCorps Member serving at Milford Nature Center, volunteered at the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank. There, she helped stock and organize food for distribution and assembled senior food boxes for the Senior Supplemental Food Program, directly supporting food security efforts across Saline County.

Molly Worm, AmeriCorps Member serving at Great Plains Nature Center, took on a hands-on project addressing hygiene needs often left unmet by SNAP benefits. By partnering with S.A.C.K. (Supporting A Community with Kindness), she crocheted 20 handmade soap pouches, which were donated to the Kansas Food Bank for inclusion in hygiene kit distributions.

Angela Kendall, AmeriCorps Member serving with KACEE:  My family and I volunteered at the Flint Hills Breadbasket in Manhattan. Together, we supported a recent egg donation project by sorting and boxing 1,600 cartons, helping prepare them for future distribution to community members.
