KACEE didn’t always stand for the Kansas Association for Conservation and Environmental Education. Originally, it stood for the Kansas Advisory Council for Environmental Education. In our earliest days, KACEE was formed to serve as an advisor to the State Board and Department of Education on environmental education. Since the early origins of our organizational history, KACEE has worked to maintain that relationship with our State Board and Department of Education and, in 2003, we were fortunate enough to have that relationship cemented with a person who resolutely advocated for and supported environmental education: Janet Waugh.

Janet served as the longest running board member for the Kansas State Department of Education and we were lucky enough to have her join our KACEE Board as an ex-officio member in 2003. Â
It is with profound sadness that I share that Janet passed away on January 11th.
Janet served with KACEE for 20 years (until she vacated her board position) and was invaluable in sharing her wisdom and insight, for creating opportunities for KACEE to share our story with the State Department and Board of Education, and for pushing us to do more for our Kansas kids.Â

There are so many who will feel her loss. We extend our deepest sympathies to Janet's children and grandchildren, as well as to all of those who had the honor and privilege of working with her. Â
We will most fondly remember Janet for her always-present and endearing smile, her clever wit, and her unwavering commitment to environmental education, to teachers, and to students across the state of Kansas. May we all carry on her legacy.
