AmeriCorps Legislative Day at the Capitol

Last week was AmeriCorps Week, so we're sharing the powerful stories of how #AmeriCorpsWorks. National service turns everyday acts into extraordinary change.

AmeriCorps members, Kelly M. and Megan V., along with KACEE’s AmeriCorps Coordinator, Leonore Enfield, represented eeCorps at the 2026 Legislative Day at the Capitol. Hosted by the Kansas Volunteer Commission, AmeriCorps members gathered to share with Legislators and the general public about the service work they are doing all across the state of Kansas.  Kelly and Megan shared about the work they are doing to increase environmental literacy for PreK-12 students and build capacity for environmental education at their host sites.

Megan brought one of the hands-on activities she developed at the Milford Nature Center, giving participants a look at hands-on learning activities she uses with students. Kelly, with the help of a fellow educator at Kansas Children’s Discovery Center, created magnetic wooden sunflowers and attached them to a packet of sunflower seeds to give away to everyone who stopped at the table.

In the afternoon, AmeriCorps members participated in a service project for Harvesters, packing food boxes with all the ingredients needed to make Chicken Enchilada Soup. Each box included a recipe card so that families could easily prepare the meal using ingredients commonly found in food banks. Together, AmeriCorps staff, program coordinators, and members packed over 200 boxes to help fellow Kansans.
