NAAEE Guidelines for Excellence

The National Project for Excellence in Environmental Education, initiated by the North American Association for Environmenal Education (NAAEE) in 1993, has developed a series of Guidelines that set the standards for high-quality environmental education. Each of these publications was developed by a diverse team of professionals, and each has gone through a substantive review by thousands of professionals prior to its publication.

Through the National Project for Excellence in Environmental Education, NAAEE is taking the lead in establishing guidelines for the development of balanced, scientifically accurate, and comprehensive environmental education programs. Quality environmental education programs help develop an environmentally literate citizenry that can compete in our global economy; has the skills, knowledge, and inclinations to make well-informed choices; and exercises the rights and responsibilities of members of a community.

Aligning Guidelines for Excellence to National Standards

For the first time in the nation’s history, the United States has released a common set of national standards with a singular focus on getting all of America’s students prepared to succeed in college and/or their careers. The key skills articulated in the Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards are essential tools required for students to be functionally literate, but they go beyond basic reading, writing, science and math skills to include critical thinking, analysis, and synthesis. These standards are shaping education in the United States. Linking environmental education and these national education standards is essential.

Thankfully, the Kentucky Environmental Education Council has developed a crosswalk that shows the connections between the Common Core Standards for English Language Arts and Excellence in Environmental Education: Guidelines for Learning (K-12). Scroll down to download these documents.

Now that the Next Generation Science Standards have been finalized, NAAEE is creating a crosswalk showing the connections with Excellence in Environmental Education: Guidelines for Learning (K-12). In the meantime, Scott Carley has created a graphic that shows the connections between the NGSS framework and various standards/principles, including Excellence in Environmental Education: Guidelines for Learning (K-12).
